Session 1

HEADSTAFF meeting 7:00 PM ON WEDNESDAY EVENING 10 SIVAN - JUNE 6

1. Work with a Mission : BEGIN with the END in mind:

What is PLANNING? - Experience your summer in advance

  • "Take hold of the future or the future will take hold of you."
  • Helps management to clarify, focus, and research their business's or project's development & prospects.
  • Provides a considered and logical framework within which a business can develop and pursue business strategies over the next three to five years.
  • Offers a benchmark against which actual performance can be measured and reviewed.

Tips:

  • Write things down! Put them in your phone…
  • Don't bit off more then you can chew, you can do everything, BUT not at once.
  • Mendel Popack dates, color coded, time line, reminders working backwards…

2. Expect the unexpected - Back up the back up-

  • If well planned out what's the issue?
  • Camp administrators and directors did not “pull your name out of a hat”

3. Think out of the box: make camp your dream, and live it…

4. Maintain high staff MORALE and build leadership

  • What is MORALE anyway?
  • Rabbi Bryski story 1943
  • Head Staff Morale > Staff Morale > Camper Morale
  • Discipline - Avoid resentment - Let the child save face

REPORT for SESSION 1

The room was too small for the two minyonim of CGI Headstaff who gathered Wednesday night at the Tzivos Hashem Resource Center on Kingston and President to hear a talk on Tricks and Tips of Camp Management by R. Michoel Harari and share a few tips of their own.

Michoel Harari who has been running Camp Youth Outdoor Adventures for eight years running and is a full time educator at Lubavitcher Yeshiva (OP), had some novel and not-so-novel recommendations for the coming summer's leaders and educators.

Here is a sampling of R. Michoel Harari's suggestions:

  • “Work with a Mission : BEGIN with the END in mind”
  • "Take hold of the future or the future will take hold of you.”
  • “Evaluate yourself and your performance before anyone else does.”
  • “Don't be too proud to ask the Camp Director for advice”
  • “Don't bit off more then you can chew, you can do everything, BUT not at once.”
  • “Your priority should be to make self-motivated leaders out of the campers, not only guide them to do good things.”
  • “Make camp your dream, and live it…”

And there was much more.

The participants included veteran as well as first year Directors, Head Counselors, and Learning Directors some of whom will also be planning the annual STAFFWEEK at CAMPSCHOOL in Crown Heights the week prior to camp.

“These bochrim and yungerlite are very special,” said R. Michoel Albukerk, the coordinator of STAFFWEEK. “When they organize the Staffweek program, they are going the extra mile train themselves and equip their staff with the tools and the vision to build top notch Chassidim from our children at CGI's all over the world. And every participant of Staffweek will make sure that all their camps will be ‘The Rebbe's Camp'.”

If you would like to hear this session, and you are Head Staff who missed the event you can send an email verifying your position (name, camp, location, director's name & phone) to Tzivosusa@aol.com and you will receive instructions how to view it online as soon as it is uploaded.

STAFFWEEK, in its tenth year, is conducted by Tzivos Hashem Resource Center and Crafts Workshops.
